Trivial Matters #13 – Foreign Language Best Picture nominees

Having just watched La Grande Illusion, which was the first film in a language other than English to receive a nomination for Best Picture, I thought I’d take a moment to recognize (in advance of actually viewing and reviewing them) the non-English language films that have been so nominated.

An * indicates that the film was also nominated Best Foreign Language Film. A double ** means it won Best Foreign Language Film (so far, no non-English language film has won Best Picture).

  • La Grande Illusion (French, 1938)
  • (French, 1969)**
  • The Emigrants (Swedish, 1971/72)*
    • Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film in 1971, and Best Picture in 1972.
  • Cries and Whispers (Swedish, 1973)
  • Il Postino: The Postman (Italian, 1995)
  • Life is Beautiful (Italian, 1998)**
  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Mandarin, 2000)**
  • Letters from Iwo Jima (Japanese, 2006)
  • Amour (French, 2012)**
